Boarder Learning and Support

Fairholme College sets a high academic standard and encourages each girl to reach her goals and achieve her best.

Developing and implementing effective learning skills strongly influences not only academic outcomes, but also achieving life goals.

As part of her overall Fairholme College experience, each Boarder is supported and encouraged in developing a strong work ethic, independence and self-discipline, in managing her study program.

Boarding House staff are sensitive to each girl’s academic practices, strengths and learning style, and work to assist her to maintain a healthy balance between study and other commitments.

Homework (Prep)

All girls complete supervised homework, or Prep, from Monday to Thursday evenings and on Sunday.

For all Boarders there are specific, supervised study periods during which girls can work without interruption.

  • Years 5 to 10 are supervised from Monday to Thursday evening in the Greta Centre and classrooms, from 7-8.15pm.
  • Years 11 and 12 complete Prep in the Boarding House from 7pm throughout the week.

During every period of Prep, all girls have access to a member of the teaching staff. To support strong study habits and routines, there is an additional Prep session for Boarders on Sunday morning.

The specific times set aside for Prep act only as a minimum guide and many Boarders will want, or need, to do extra work or study. This is supported through the tutorial sessions held in the Day School and through Homework Help sessions available in the Learning Enhancement Centre.

Tutorials

College Academic staff are available to assist and tutor Boarding students during nightly Prep.

Boarders are encouraged to attend after school tutorials which operate across subject areas in the Day School. Support in managing and structuring academic load is also available during Homework Help sessions held in the Learning Enhancement Centre before school.

Boarder Study

All girls have time before school, after school and on weekends to complete additional unsupervised study, either individually or with a group of friends, in the Boarding House.

All dorms include individual desk and study facilities for the girls to use at any time. Over the weekend it is not uncommon to see girls outside in Daisy Culpin Courtyard, enjoying the beautiful College grounds whilst working.

Before and after school, Boarders are also able to access the College’s two centres for learning:

  • The Greta Centre - servicing Middle and Senior School staff and students
  • The GRETA Junior - servicing Fairholme Junior staff and students.

The Greta Centre Online virtual library is available 24/7 via the Fairholme Intranet.
